Oh my giddy aunt, it must be spider season on this Mad magical island!! (At least in Tana!
What amazes me is how they manage to spin one loooooong line spanning a good couple of metres from a branch of a tree to the thatch of a roof!
I think spiders sleep during the day after the activity that takes place during the night.
"Come into my parlour" said the spider to the.........
Oh my giddy aunt! I do not like spiders!!
They eat humungus suppers! In the morning one realises how invaluable spiders are.....ugh!!! All curled up in the middle of their webs, belly full, sound asleep with their leftovers hanging all over the show! Even on those long thin lines.
Just too creepy.......
The morning after.....
It bugged (excuse the pun) me so much that I had a terrible spider dream that night! You know the kind where you are sooooo afraid, you want to scream for help but no sound comes out of your mouth no matter how hard you try to scream!! You lie there paralysed unable to do anything......then you wake up! And the memory remains of your inability to make a sound!!
Our supper & breakfast quickly brought to mind the yummy stuff from SA that was tucked safely away in our securely, plastic wrapped suitcases.......We planned so diligently what to bring; definitely Bovril, Crosse & Blackwell tangy mayo in a new plastic squeeze bottle, Mrs Ball's Chutney & loads of packet sauces, marinades & creamy mushroom soup! Only to find out, the SA ex-pats buy their SA products at a Shoprite Checkers in Tana!! and bring it to Taolagnaro on the domestic flight, just like the locals. All perishables in a little cooler bag that becomes part of your hand luggage and the rest packed in a box, courtesy of Shoprite Checkers. ha haa! Oh I love this Mad magical island! So next time, less groceries means more space for clothes!!
But after today, it can get even better. One step closer to a supermarket maybe? A shop has opened at the Guest House Canteen area. Where the single guys stay that work at QMM. The Guest House manager, who is an ex-Taolagnaro mayor, who goes by the lovely name of Mami (which means sweet!) pronounced - Mahmi. Remember my first Malagasy word - sugar/siramam(y)? don't pronounce the y - anyway, back to the story...... has requested a list of items from us ladies that we would like to see in his new shop & he guarantees a good price! Sweet Mr Sweet, I'm working on that list.
Our breakfast menu had printed on it: (amongst other items):
Omelette - 3 pieces...nice! Omelettes for breakfast, two please. Ha!ha! It was literally 3 pieces. Omelette sans any filling, lovely fresh lettuce with a slice of fresh tomato! Oh one has to smile at the imagination of the person to whom the breakfast is served!
On arrival at the airport in Taolagnaro two happy smiling faces were pressed through the open windows. Kiki & Daniel, obviously happy to see us. Kiki was not impressed with Hilton for not phoning him from Tana. But all was forgiven with the usual chirps from my husband and his welcome back from Kiki was: "So happy to have you back Mr Hilton, you make me laugh!"
We went straight from the airport to buy some bread and other essentials and there was Monsieur (Mr) Vanilla Man, waving enthusiastically like we were old friends returning....maybe he did genuinely miss us? His friendliness brought a smile to my face and I felt very welcome and glad to be home!
Our suitcases were pretty heavy. Hilton in his attempt to be Superman, pulled a muscle in his lower back! For those who don't know him so well, others don't move as fast or as quick as he would like them to! It has been very awkward for him in the bed!! Very uncomfortable when trying to move and the getting up was painful, otherwise, no problem. The cherry on top happened yesterday....(he is going to kill me for telling this!) he hurt his hand/wrist, won't tell you where! So he kinda had to levitate in bed to keep comfortable!!! Couldn't lie on the left side, it's sore, couldn't lie on the right 'cos that hand is sore, couldn't sleep on his back, 'cos then I kick him for snoring!!! Moral of the story: It is advisable, when approaching the most exciting age in one's life, 60, to move with extreme caution! Suffice to say, I'm not near 60 and I woke up twice last night with my own snoring! So glad Hilton was incapacitated and couldn't kick me!
Ha! I should've taken a photo of our front veranda, doors and windows. You just wouldn't believe the miggies, buggies (new word) that were stuck there. Our front veranda light was left on. One of the gardeners switches all the veranda lights on at about 4:30pm every day, even when we're home and I promptly switch ours off. So you can imagine the buggie and miggie joy having this delightful light to play in, so much so they just died in it. It took me the best part of a day to clean them all off.
We brought back with us our own bed linen and curtains for our room. It has a lovely "homely" feel about it and coming home last night after a most delicious fish 'n chips, chocolate mousse (for me) & espresso coffee (for Hilton) at the little French pizzeria (you DON'T want a pizza there!!) we walked into our home and it finally smells like us!!
My wool is unpacked. I've crocheted one adult Floral Hat. Celebrated our first proper Shabbat. Baked my very first challah here on this Mad magical island. Made four small loaves, gave three away. My friend asked me if I was Jewish? Had a happy time chatting to her about all the wonderful experiences I've had with my precious friends at Abraham Levy, about Israel, about King David Dancers and now I get to pass on the joy of baking one's own challah!
It doesn't take much for the fragrance of His Presence to permeate our surroundings!
